Bombardier leads IRIS certification for rail signalling in Russia

January 30 , 2012 — Moscow

Bombardier Transportation's signalling engineering joint venture (JV) in Moscow has became one of the first rail signalling enterprises in Russia to achieve certification to the International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS). This global quality accreditation, awarded in December 2011, recognises the high level of product and service quality within the Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd. Company.

Developed by Europe's main rail system integrators and run through UNIFE (the Association of the European Rail Industry), IRIS is based on the international ISO 9001 standard, adapted for the rail industry. Ensuring that rail company management systems are fully aligned to the needs of the market, it is the main certification scheme for all suppliers and rolling stock manufacturers globally.

The scope of the certification includes the manufacturing, design, development and maintenance of rail signalling and control systems at the site, which focuses on the implementation of the proven BOMBARDIER EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlocking (CBI) system. The Moscow JV joins a global list of Bombardier accredited sites. Its Signalling Division was the first multinational in the industry to achieve IRIS certification at all its major signalling sites in Europe.

Konstantin Khromushkin, General Director of BT (Signal) Ltd , said: "This is a further important milestone, recognising the quality of our production and services. We have been the leading contributor to the modernisation of the Russian rail infrastructure for the last 15 years, and look forward to continuing to apply our advanced methods to deliver our high-quality, innovative and high-tech solutions."

Bombardier Transporation (Signal) Ltd was the first international JV to be formed for the Russian Railways (RZD), in 1996, and the first company certified to deliver the latest generation signalling equipment adapted to RZD's technical requirements.Today, with more than 150 employees, the company provides services for the full life cycle of the EBI Lock 950 CBI system from project design, to operation and maintenance. In 2010, Bombardier also purchased a stake in the RZD manufacturing subsidiary known as Elteza.

Since the first EBI Lock 950 CBI system was delivered at the Kalashnikovo station in 1999, 171 stations have been equipped: 112 in Russia and 59 in other countries. In Russia, operating on 15 regional branches of the Russian rail network from Kaliningrad to the Far East, these systems are controlling over 3400 point-machines and 507 km of automatic line-blocks.

EBI Lock CBI systems provide major enhancements to capacity, flexibility and high availability. Stations can be controlled locally or from any remote control centre, and components can be serviced in the field without disturbing traffic. With the most country-specific adaptations of any CBI system world-wide and over 900 units in operation globally, EBI Lock units can be customised to suit the requirements of different rail administrations and interface with other types of interlocking systems.

Bombardier Transportation's Rail Control Solutions portfolio covers the whole range of BOMBARDIER CITYFLO mass transit solutions, from manual to fully automatic, as well as communication-based systems. It also provides BOMBARDIER INTERFLO mainline solutions, from conventional to ERTMS Level 2 systems. Bombardier also provides a complete palette of wayside and onboard signalling products.
