Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd Commissions First Radio-based Main Line Train Control in CIS

May 5, 2014 — Moscow

  • Implementation of the BOMBARDIER INTERFLO 550 solution in Kazakhstan marks new era for rail control in the 1520 gauge market

Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd, Bombardier’s signalling joint venture with Russian Railways (RZD), has commissioned the first radio-based train control (RBTC) mainline system in the CIS region. The advanced INTERFLO 550 solution is now operating for Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) on the Uzen to Bolshak line, connecting to theTurkmenistan border.

The system has been fully adapted to the requirements of the 1520 gauge network. Data is exchanged between the train and radio block centre via a radio-based system. Headways are calculated based on moving block sections and train speed instead of the fixed block sections used in conventional interlocking systems.

Peter Cedervall, President, Rail Control Solutions Division, Bombardier Transportation, said: “Our leading radio-based solution enables high capacity while significantly reducing costs due to less wayside equipment and easier maintenance. It is an excellent solution for large countries with high transport demands like Kazakhstan, where we are also delivering the system for the Zhetygen to Korgas line, connecting to the border with China.”

Konstantin Khromushkin, General Director of Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd, added: “This is a very significant project for our joint venture, reflecting the success of our international cooperation. Kazakhstan has become the first CIS country to implement state-of-the-art rail control solutions and we are grateful to KTZ for its commitment to innovation and its participation in this milestone project. By continuing to focus on innovation, we will develop a solid technical and maintenance base for future deliveries of advanced signalling across the region.”

Established in 1996, Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd was the first company certified to deliver the latest generation signalling equipment adapted to RZD’s technical requirements. Today, with more than 190 employees, the company focuses on implementing proven BOMBARDIER EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlocking (CBI) systems. Since 2010, Bombardier has also been a partner in the RZD rail signalling manufacturing subsidiary, Elteza.
