Bombardier’s Cyber Security Solution Wins Top Prize from Russian Railways
- Bombardier Transportation’s Russian signaling joint venture recognized for its contribution to protecting rail signaling systems from cyber-attack
Berlin, September 21, 2016 – Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has been awarded a prize by Russian Railways (RZD) in recognition for its innovative Cyber Security Solution for rail control. The solution was announced as winner in the Infrastructure Quality category of RZD’s annual competition for ‘Best Quality in Rolling Stock and Complex Engineering Systems’. Bombardier's Russian signaling engineering joint venture (JV), Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd, accepted the award at a ceremony on September 21, held during RZD’s Rail Engineering Partnership Conference for 1520 and 1435 Rail Gauge Manufacturers.
Bombardier and RZD jointly developed the award-wining Cyber Security Solution to mitigate the risks posed by cyber-attacks to rail networks. The system addresses threats to the security of computer-based rail control systems, including interaction with external systems and unauthorised access. The project is part of a cooperation agreement signed in 2013 and a pilot system has been in operation at Kirzhach station, on Moscow’s Large Railway Ring Line, since July 2016.
Upon receiving the award, Andrey Golubev, General Manager, Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd, commented, “Delivering solutions that protect rail networks from the evolving threats posed by cyber-attack is of paramount importance. We are proud to have made a significant contribution to ensuring the continued safety of our rail transportation network.”
A pioneer in rail control for over 100 years, Bombardier delivers on its promise to provide the most advanced signaling technology to ensure safe and efficient rail operations. Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd was the first international JV formed for the Russian Railways and since equipping the first station in 1999, the joint venture has become an expert in modern rail control for the 1520 mm railway gauge market. To date, more than 300 stations across the region have been equipped with Bombardier computer-based interlocking (CBI) systems and the JV is at the forefront of introducing the latest radio-based train control for the market, the BOMBARDIER INTERFLO 550 solution, in Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
In Russia, the team has recently delivered a signaling solution for the Moscow Central Ring Project, with Signaling Research Institute JSC NIIAS, and is developing the local manufacture of rail control products through its stake in United Electrical Engineering Plants (JSC ELTEZA).
